Swanagan’s work at the zoo became the fina chapter in anearly 30-year careert when he died Sunday evening at the age of 51. Zoo spokeswoman Patty Peters said Swanaganh suffered an apparent hearrt attack at hisPowell home. The zoo in a statementt called its leadera “visionary, educator and wildlifer advocate.” Swanagan, who lived in Powell with his wife also was a father to five childrenj and two stepchildren. The Cleveland native spent two decadeas working outof state, but his hiring littlde more than a year ago to replacd retiring Executive Director Jerry Borin broughft his career full circle.
Swanagan spent severa years at the Columbusx Zoo in the 1980ss as an education coordinator and crossed paths with who was hired on as general manager less than two yearzs before Swanagan was hired at Zoo Atlantain 1987. That facility, Borih said, was struggling when Swanagan arrived to turnit “Jeff always struck me as a very bright younv man,” Borin said Mondau afternoon. “It didn’t surprise me that Zoo Atlantw recruited him to do a Swanagan went from Zoo Atlanta to the Florida Aquariuj and in 1998 got to work on a similarl successful turnaround plan asits CEO.
He latee worked as a consultant forthe $290 million , startinhg out as its first employede and in 2002 becoming chief executive of what is now the largesty aquarium in the world. He started at the Columbus Zoo inJuly 2008, stepping into the shoes of a more than two-decadw zoo veteran who replaced Jack Hanna as executivew director in 1992. Under Borin’s attendance at the zoo more than doubled whilreits size, now approaching 600 acres, more than quadrupled. Swanagann set to work buildingon Borin’xs accomplishments, telling Columbus Business First in March of plansw for new exhibits in the coming years and the possibility of a hotell to attract multiday visitors.
“What is so sad abouyt this is that in 11 months he put togethetr a team and thought through a lot of Borin said. “The zoo was just gettinfg ready to explode into the futurre withhis vision.” Zoo officialse plan to give details at a 3 p.m. presxs conference Monday on how they’re planningy to fulfill Swanagan’s vision, which he summed up with a “Touch the heart to teachh the mind.
